Serving Coffee

“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”  John 6:27

When the door opened he stepped through as if it was just another day.  His attitude was vibrant and his mind was set on another successful day at the office.  As he grabbed his coffee at the local coffee shop on the 2nd floor he noticed the cashier was shaken and somewhat distraught.  He received his coffee and rather than leave, he stepped to the side and waited for her to finish with the few other customers in line.  When the others had cleared away, he stepped forward and inquired, “If you don’t mind me asking, you seem upset, is there anything I can do to help?”  Her response was slow and invoked tears, “l just received a call from my sister that her son is missing and never made it to school this morning.  There is no one to cover for me this morning, so I feel helpless when she needs me most.”  The man walked around the counter without saying a word, asked if he could pray with her and proceeded to bow his head and say a few words to help comfort her.  He then surprised the customers who had formed a new line.  He took out his cell phone, and placed a call.  He told the person on the other end, “I’m going to be late today, I’ll check in with you in a few hours.”  and hung up.  He then asked her where there was another apron, and he put it on.  Surprised, she looked at him with confusion; “What are you doing?”  His reply was simple, “I worked behind a counter just like this to get through college, I’ve got this, go help your sister.”

He then proceeded to familiarize himself with the cash register and the coffee machine and supplies.  He gave her his cell phone number and asked that she give him a call when they found the little boy.  He then turned to take the next order, while she stood there dumbfounded, unsure of what to do.  Should she trust this man and leave, would she get fired for leaving, why would he do this?  So many questions ran through her mind, but she decided to take the opportunity and called her sister to meet up with her and help search for her son.  As she was leaving she looked back and saw that he had already helped the first two people in line, and they all seemed quite satisfied.

The little boy was found a few hours later in the park down the street from the school.  He had gotten off the bus and followed a stray dog to the park and then got sidetracked and began playing without any care in the world that someone was frantically looking for him.  Once reunited with his Mom, her sister immediately called the man at the shop and started back.  When she arrived, everything was perfectly normal, and he was cleaning the counter top and wiping down the coffee maker.  Only a few hours had passed, and her tears demonstrated her gratefulness.  “How can I repay you?”, she asked.  His answer was simple, “Help someone else in need when the opportunity comes up.”  With that he took off the apron and put his jacket back on.  He picked up his briefcase and started to walk away.  As he did, she asked, “What will your boss say?  Will you be in trouble?”  He smiled and said, “I only have one boss – Jesus Christ, and He said it’s perfectly fine.”  The man then walked to the elevators and proceeded up to the top floor, where he was received with the typical “Good morning, Sir.” followed by applause from many of his employees as he made his way to the corner office.  You see, the man behind the counter that morning had poured cups of coffee for most of the people in the office was indeed the CEO of a small business in that building.

A job is nothing if it takes away the essence of your relationship with Jesus Christ.  If that relationship is put at risk, or minimized because of your job, it’s time to move on.  Everything you do needs to reflect the love and compassion of your Savior and others will see it through you.  This is your purpose each and every day you step into the workplace, never forget that and you’ll never go hungry.
