Do They Know You’re a Christian

Make 2014 a year for sharing

“The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”” – John 5:10

He sat on the curb in his worn shoes and torn jeans with holes throughout.  He hands were covered in the dirt and grime from years of disregard.  He wore a baseball cap that had long faded and dark sunglasses that hid his blindness.  As he heard footsteps, he would lift his cup, but his voice no longer had the energy or desire to speak.  When the rains came, he would rise, steady himself and manage to walk along the edge of the curb, in traffic, to the overpass, where he would sit until it passed.  And so, his life had been for 38 years.  He would beg during the day and sleep under the stars each night.  The little that he received each day would afford scraps of bread and perhaps a cup of coffee each day at the little corner store.

On the opposite side of the road, rising above the overpass, and this man’s small corner of the world was a steeple.  The church had been there for over 20 years and thousands had come and gone every Sunday, Wednesday and other days throughout the week.  His blindness kept him from knocking upon their door for these many years.  The church was right there, less than 100 yards away and yet to him it might as well have been 100 miles.  His ailment, his handicap had prevented his awareness to seek help, love and assistance from the compassionate followers of Jesus Christ. But, where were they in fulfilling their purpose?

Periodically, he would get a rush of passersby that would stimulate his begging even more, but in his blindness he could not detect that they were heading to/from church.  His receipts would generally go up during those times, as the clank of coins hit the bottom of his cup.  There were times when he could hear footsteps, and then make out soft voices saying, “No sweety, we don’t have time to stop, we’re going to be late” or “No honey, if we give to him, he’ll just waste it on drugs or alcohol.”  The comments had made him bitter over the years, so he simply chose not to engage people any longer.

Then one Sunday morning, as people walked past on their way to church, something happened.  A new member of the community had come to the church for the first time.  As he walked past the beggar, he stopped, knelt down and placed his hand upon the man’s shoulder.  In response the blind man raised his cup, but the stranger, gently lowered the beggars arm and leaned forward.  He whispered in the man’s ear and then helped him to his feet.  He placed one arm around the blind man’s back and propped him up.  People kept passing, some making comments under their breath, others just staring in disbelief.

The stranger helped the beggar across the street, and down the sidewalk to the front door of the church.  Walking inside, the two of them sat in a pew near the back.  Those around them covered their noses from the stench of the blind beggar clothes and hygiene.  The sermon that morning was on loving others as God loves you, not because you deserve it, but because He offers it.  His love is not dependent upon your state in life, your possessions or your back account, it is free and available to every man, woman and child equally.  And likewise, we are called to love others in the same manner.

Your path will cross with 100’s of people each day.  Isn’t it about time you started to love them and care for them in the same manner God loves and cares for you?  In their blindness to His truth, they are looking at you to see if it’s real.  How will they see God in you if you aren’t able to demonstrate it for them.  If you claim to be a Christian, then you ought not be embarrassed or hesitant to tell the whole world about the good news.

It’s Not All Roses

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”  - John 15:18

The three words that eat away at each of us. If you have children that is, for those of you without children perhaps it's not as daunting. When a child utters the phrase, "I hate you." something is stirred inside. We try so hard as parents to love our children, to keep them safe and advise them on how to avoid the pitfalls that we may have tripped over. Unfortunately our advice often comes across as control and the older our children become the less they want to be controlled. But, it's not just our children who hate us, is it?

Has it happened to you? Has someone verbally stated their anger in a way of hatred? I am constantly reminded through a variety of mediums of those that despise Christianity, even to the point of hatred. I ask myself why. Why do people feel so strongly against Christianity, yet less so against other religions of the world? What makes it so different that it causes such an emotional reaction from some to the point where Christians are being killed for their beliefs even in the 21st century.

I realize it is a very complex situation, but I have a hypothesis. Christ tells us this will happen in John 15. In His infinite wisdom and comprehensive understanding of humanity, He could easily see that the core fundamentals of being a Christian would contradict the human emotion, logic and our desire for control. What are these core fundamentals: servitude, humility, love, justice, faith, accept Christ as Savior and Lord and most importantly that He is the one and only way to the Father. But, to accept that means we must give up control of life and trust in something we cannot see or touch. Taking the gospel as God's truth, based strictly on face value without scientific proof is counter to man's desire for research and hard facts.

To accept Christianity as truth means accepting these things, and thereby accepting that Revelations is equally true. The rigidness and narrowness of following Christ sets it apart from nearly every other religious philosophy where good works, karma, and man's love of self (to name a few) establish eternal status. In the end I believe much of the hatred for Christians (then and now) stems from a fear that it just might be true. This fear leads to actions of abolishing those that believe; by doing so then God's eternal plan can be controlled by man. This sounds an awful lot like it is with our children when we try to control them. We give them advice that will cause the least amount of harm and they rebel. Similarly, our Father in heaven attempts to lead us down a path that is filled with His love and grace, and mankind rebels.

What we learn from Jesus though is to somehow love them, even when they despise and hate us for our beliefs. Jesus was hated by the masses, and took it all to the cross, where he was able to forgive them all.

Freedom is not Free

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It with your friends

“Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.” –1 Peter 2:16

The debate will continue long after my feet have left this earth.  It started centuries ago and continues to this very day.  A man’s freedom to do and say what he wants often times encroaches on another man’s freedoms or liberties and in this case who is rightfully due their respective freedom?  There were 10 Amendments to the US Constitution, ratified in 1791,  drawn up to ensure that the rights and freedoms of the people, were addressed with some order and that people were given the freedom to pursuit life outside of the tyranny of the Government.  These 10 Amendments (known as the Bill of Rights) can be found here.  Today I want to focus on one of those 10 Amendments, and it is the most commonly referenced of all the Amendments.

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

We have freedom of religion.  It is not something that can be or ever should be imposed by our Government.  One of the greatest freedoms we experience in this life should not be guarded and managed/controlled by mankind.  It is a spiritual freedom, one that each of us in our own manner must come to experience.  Within the United States of America we have a melting pot of religions expressed throughout our land.  Statistics would show that within America we have those who are Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Wiccan, New Age, Christian and even those who have no belief or are agnostic.  This freedom is essential to the core of what our fore-fathers put into the Bill of Rights.  As much as I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord, there are those who believe that he was just a great prophet or really nice guy.

I can’t force someone to believe as I believe.  There are countries in the world which will try to force their citizens to believe in a single religious view as if the matter were something that man could control.  The reality is that each of us must come to this awareness and spiritual understanding on our own.  That right, that freedom was originally granted by the Creator of the Universe, not by mankind.  Despite that fact that it is written in the Bill of Rights, it is inherently given by God himself.  He is not going to force you to believe in Him, or to love Him.  The freedom that He grants has not changed.  Since Adam and Eve were given freedom in the garden of Eden, every human born has had the same freedom of choice.  They made choices and introduced original sin into the world, by choosing against God’s plan for their life.  They chose to follow the evil that was in the world, and pursuit the freedom of separation from God, over the freedom that is granted by serving and living for God.

We are making the same choices today.  The world knows about God Almighty and His Son Jesus Christ.  Yet, there are those in the world who are choosing to turn away from God and pursue the world’s freedoms, rooted in evil and deception.  One cannot pursue the world’s freedom and expect to fully serve God, for God’s ways are not of this world.  Each of us are making choices for the worlds freedoms each and every day as we choose to follow God’s plans or our own plans.  You are no different than Adam and Eve.  God is saying “Follow Me”, and you are saying “No, I know where I want to go.  But I still love you God.”  Don’t be misled by the freedoms that the world has granted you and confuse them with the ultimate freedom God has in store for you in eternity.  Think through your decisions carefully and evaluate them based on who’s path are you really following.

Bible Study – James (day 9)

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It
“Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” – James 1:26-27

Self control and humility.  Two words that are often times foreign in the 21st century vocabulary.  As we discussed a few days back, the words that come from our lips cannot return thereafter and must be carefully chosen before speaking.  Rash, crude or abusive language is demeaning to other individuals regardless of it’s intent.  It demonstrates to the other individual that they are less worthy of intelligent conversation.  Often times it expresses an anger or aggression that might be otherwise kept inside.  Let’s be honest, when is the last time someone used foul language with you and your immediate reaction was “Wow, that person is very articulate and well spoken.”  Generally, it is just the opposite reaction.

But it happens.  We lose our temper and words have come from our mouth before we are capable of stopping them.  What if you heard your Pastor, Priest or Minister using curse words from the pulpit?  Would you consider them educated, full of the Holy Spirit and the love of God?  Your impression of them would certainly be diminished based on their choice of words of this nature.  We can’t demonstrate God’s love, mercy and kindness and then turn around and carelessly lose control of our words and actions.  We have created an image of hypocrisy and reduced the image of God in the eyes of the beholder.

We must be able to exercise self control in this walk with God.  The eyes of the world are upon you at all times when they realize that you are a follower of Jesus Christ.  There is a natural tendency in all mankind to evaluate and judge the authenticity of your claim to Christianity.  Jesus Christ set a very high bar for what Christianity looks like.  Completely unachievable in this lifetime, but a goal none the less.  His actions represented God the Father in everything He did, and so should ours.  But it’s so much more than actions, it must come from the heart, mind and soul.

The more you are learning and strengthening your walk with Christ, the more you are naturally inclined to emulate and present His love, purity and humility to others.  There is an old saying, “Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” (Charles Caleb Colton), and it holds so very true in today’s world.  We need to imitating Christ and let others imitate us in our actions, words, motives and love towards others.  Take control of our words and actions so others can see the Holy Spirit that lives within you, not so that you can look pious, holy and religious to those observing your actions.  This little shift in your thinking will do incredible things for God’s Kingdom, because people will take notice and want to know what makes you different.  Then you have the perfect opportunity to tell them.

ACTION: Church services are on Sunday, Wednesday and sometimes on Saturday night.  It is expected that you put on your best behavior during those times.  The real question is who are you when you aren’t in the comfort zone of the church sanctuary, or around your fellow Christians.  Focus this week on living and demonstrating the “Christ-likeness” throughout the entire week through your language, actions, serving others and humbleness.  See what a difference this new you will make in those around you.

But Why Do You Believe?

Read It, Learn It, Live it, Share It
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled"  -  Matthew 5:6

Why are you a Christian?  To avoid Hell, you put a checkmark in the box and move on with life.
Did you become a Christian because of an emotional response to a problem you were having in life?  Many of us come to that point in life when there seems to be no other way to make it through the struggles of the day.  So we give our life to Jesus.
Or are you a Christian because your parents were and their parents were?  It is often something that becomes a part of our character simply through association with others that have gone on before us.
Do you recall a point in time during your Christian walk that you were actually hungry for the Word of God?  When there just wasn’t enough time in the day to take it all in, when you just didn’t want to put it down and walk away.
Most of these questions, if not all, should be leading you to the root of your Christian faith.  We are called to be more than followers of Jesus Christ.  In this life we are called to be His ambassador, His servant and disciple.  We are to learn more and more each and every day as we walk this earth, and then share that with those we meet.  Take the challenge of standing up for Jesus Christ in situations at work, school, play groups or at the grocery store.  His righteousness is our goal and there is nothing that should come between us and the pursuit of that goal.

You see, we are all comfortable in life.  Many of us accepted Jesus because we knew that if there is a heaven and hell, we surely don’t want to go to hell.  Well, that was a good choice, because there is a hell and you’re right – you don’t want to go there.  But that is not what being a Christian is about.  Committing your life to Jesus Christ involves much, much more.  It means He becomes Lord of your life.  He is the One in charge, the leader and the director of your life.  This isn’t the first time you’ve heard this, all throughout scriptures the disciples who walked daily with Him referred to Him as Lord.  In Acts 2:36, Peter says to those in Jerusalem, ““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

We hunger for His love and His guidance in helping us find our purpose in this life.  Today, I want to ask you to actually consider making Jesus Christ the Lord of your life and all that this implies, and then you will begin to see the path which He has for you.  A path of righteousness and hunger for His word to be made known to all mankind.  Seek Him today.
