Live It, Share It
“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring
to men that all people everywhere should repent" – Acts 17:30
Seriously, his eyes look bewildered and his teeth
were rotted through when he smiled. He
hadn’t seen a bar of soap or a comb in years and based on the greyness of his
beard and long hair one quickly assessed he was in his late 70’s. His leathered hands were held in front of him
forming a cup awaiting the kindness of a stranger. His clothes were large, tattered and torn,
covered with the dirt of living on the streets.
As a man dropped a few coins into his hands, his voiced lifted to reach
all of those in the surrounding area, and the homeless man rose to his
feet. “A GENTLE SPIRIT HAS SHOWN GRACE
AND MERCY UPON ME TODAY. MAY GOD BLESS
YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS SIR.” The man
moved along, somewhat embarrassed. The
elderly gentlemen bent over and picked up his sign, and proceeded to walk to
the coffee shop on the corner, where he purchased a small black cup of coffee.
As he came out of the shop, he straightened his coat, reached into his backpack and pulled out an old worn and torn Bible. He placed his sign on top of a nearby trashcan, and then stood in front of it. He proceeded to hold his Bible in his right hand he raised it above his head and began his daily sermon, with a loud booming voice which echoed down the corridor of city streets and office buildings. “Repent, repent for the day of the Lord is approaching. Turn from your sinful ways and receive God’s grace and salvation. . .” He continued on for hours, despite the laughing, the mocking and the insults. They call him “Crazy Ed” and he is known throughout the city as the sidewalk preacher. But, is he crazy? What would you call him?
There is one thing that rings true in every one of our lives. We are going to die or the world will end, whichever comes first. They are both unavoidable and both will bring finality to your existence in this place. At that time, tomorrow or 20 years from now, your end has come and your opportunity to share God’s message with others will cease. You are giving 80 to 90 years, maybe 100 if you’re lucky, to make a difference in this world. You can walk through each day minding your own business, breathing oxygen, eating food, sleeping and working; or you can take a stand on a truth you believe in and try to influence those around you. Do you care if they call you crazy, if the word you are preaching is truth? How many people walk by Crazy Ed and are influenced to do something different with the days they have left? If one person hears his message today, won’t the angels in heaven rejoice?
You don’t have to be a street preacher to make a difference, but you also can’t sit on the sidelines watching mankind destroy itself with perversions, immorality, lies and deceit and simply hope it will fix itself. Take the word of God seriously – you are called to do something in His Kingdom, so get up, leave your pride on the nightstand, grab your bible and get busy. Someone, somewhere needs to hear what you have to say, so their life may be changed. Quit making excuses and finding ways to avoid what God has called you to do. Let them call me crazy while God calls me Son.
