Who are you following?

Daily Thoughts – August 30th
“Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things, be on your guard so that you will not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure standing.” – 2 Peter 3:17 (in context)

The world is set on creating a comfortable perspective of the Holy, Sovereign, Lord of Lords, and King of Kings, that I commonly call God, the Father.  Just listen to the opinions of individuals from a recent survey:

“God is the universal energy that we come from”
“God loves me regardless of my choices, I know I’m forgiven”
“I live the way I want to live, and I know God will forgive my actions”
“All gods are the same, and as long as we are good, he loves us”
“There’s a higher power, but I wouldn’t call it God”
“I’m a good person, sure I have sex outside of marriage, swear, and lie; but by being good, he’ll forgive me”

Let’s face it, there are people you come in contact with every day that believe similarly to any of the above.  We acknowledge that God exists, and that we believe in God in order to get to heaven, but can we really say we are following Him?  What does it mean to follow God?

The scriptures tell us:
“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.”  - Eph 5:1-2

“No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.” – Luke 13:5

“Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. His subjects ground their teeth in anguish, and they cursed the God of heaven for their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their evil deeds and turn to God.” – Rev 16:10-11

Repent in Greek is (μετενόησα) metenoēsan; turn around, retreat from, back away, and changing one’s action.  Accepting Jesus Christ brings salvation to the lost, but repenting from our sinful actions is a necessity.  God doesn’t conform His rules to our desires, to our beliefs, or actions.  No, we must conform to His.  After all, He is sovereign, He is Lord, He is God Almighty.  He alone determines right from wrong, and righteousness from unrighteousness.  Claiming to be saved but remaining in sinful actions, knowing that they are sinful, is like slapping God in the face, and spitting upon Christ’s salvation.

Not one of us can live without sin.  I’m not claiming that you have too.  But, to continue to walk in repetition of our sins is creating separation between you and the Father.  Fall to your knees, earnestly ask forgiveness of these sinful actions, accept that God has forgiven you, and then turn from these actions as you move forward.  You will be tempted, because Satan doesn’t give up that easily.  He knows your weakness’ and how to convince you that it isn’t so bad.  This is when we call on God for strength and protection.  It’s not easy.  I struggle with it every day, as does your Pastor, your spiritual leaders, and your biblical mentors.  David struggled, Peter struggled, Paul struggled, and even Jesus was tempted by Satan, so don’t for one second believe that you won’t be.

The world looks at God as a comfortable daddy, who won’t care if I sin.  His love and forgiveness is very real, but that doesn’t mean it’s unrestricted.  You are sinning against God, not just against mankind.  In 2 Samuel 12:13 David states, “I have sinned against the Lord.”  He doesn’t state I have sinned against Bathsheba, or Uriah, or the people of Israel.  No – through adultery with Bathsheba and murdering Uriah, he sinned against God.  God is omnipotent and knows your heart and your thoughts before you have ever committed a sin.  He knows you are weak and wants you to come to Him before sinning, for His wisdom and strength to overcome.  There will be a judgement day, you will kneel before the Lord and be judged.

In His sovereignty and through His grace, He has provided you the salvation.  Your job is to live with Him and to trust in Him for your remaining days, so that on judgement day you will come before Him washed by the blood of the Lamb.  Study His word daily, speak with Him daily, seek His wisdom, repent daily of your sins (yes, daily), and share His love with others every day.  You are His child, He will guide your steps.

37 Days – Let Go of Sin

Pastor Randy’s devotional:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1-2

January 11th Prayer:
Gracious Father, You sent Jesus to die for me. I know His blood provides forgiveness for my sin. I want to be free from the bondage to sin. The same old patterns and familiar temptations have weighed me down for too long. I am asking for help! Help me Holy Spirit! Show me the doors I’ve opened in my life to allow this pattern. Show me how to repent. I know I can walk in behavioral holiness in this area and I am opening to Your power and guidance to help me stand fast in the freedom You’ve provided. I pray this in Jesus’ name!

(Name the area you fall to—the sin that seems to hang around and trip you up most often. You can overcome this and walk in victory. However, it won’t be by willpower alone. You must have the help of others and the Holy Spirit.)

My thoughts:

Also see my thoughts from Wednesday on recurring sin.

We are all continuously influenced by good and evil decisions.  Think about it.  You face decisions all day long.  What is it you rely on to make an intelligent choice for these decisions?  Your intellect, the information available to you at the time, previous outcomes from similar decisions, family or friends advice, feelings, emotions and desires.  These are the things which will influence your decisions in life.

What constitutes a sinful decision?
When the outcome of a decision results in an action that contradicts the principles and beliefs established by God the father.  There is no formal list, but we have the foundation of the 10 Commandments in scripture as we discussed in earlier posts.  For all time, God has demonstrated the repercussions of going against His commandments, and let’s face it, none of them are appealing.  We all enjoy the temporary pleasure, the worldly satisfaction often associated with a sinful act.  But it’s just that – temporary, associated with this life only, regardless of one’s lifespan it will end one day.

One of the reasons many people resist Jesus Christ, and a commitment toward His calling on their life, is because of these desires, these habits, these temporary pleasurable activities in life.  We become addicted to sin, just like addiction to a drug or alcohol.  We find ways to justify it, to cover it up as if it isn’t as bad as it is; rather than deal with addressing it, changing and turning away.

Repentance is just that, turning away from that action that separates us from God the Father.  Often times, the desire is so strong and the cover up is so deep that we would rather live with the sin, rather than truly repent and turn from it.  Some will look at the opportunity of following Jesus Christ and choose not to because they would rather continue living in their sin. They may even acknowledge His existence, recognize that He walked the earth and believe that He did incredible miracles when He walked the earth.  But, they won’t go that next step and acknowledge that He is the son of God and Savior of the world, because they realize by doing so would require a change in their lifestyle that they are not willing to accept.  Therefore, they deny His deity, and in many cases they deny the entire eternal concept all together and put all of their faith in themselves and those of this world.

What they don’t realize is that by accepting that Jesus Christ is the son of God, died for them, and rose again on the third day; they can actually discover the strength to overcome these addictions in their lives.  For man alone is not powerful in mind, or will, to overcome these things on their own, but the Lord is and with an authentic faith in Jesus Christ we are made capable.  Their acceptance that this is who they are, that they cannot change, that their actions are unchangeable is a fallacy presented by the evil one, Satan himself.  Satan uses our desires, our pride, our addictions against us.  It is his stronghold on our lives and we have only the power and authority of Jesus Christ at our disposal to stand against it.  There is no straight jacket discipline that will supernaturally enable you to overcome this evil.

Mankind was designed to love and worship the Lord.  That’s it.  That’s our only purpose for being created.  The sins of this world are those things that stand between He and us, and draw us away from this purpose.  Choose this day to trust in the Lord and lean on His understanding and not your own.  Repent and turn from your sinful actions and pray for the Lord to give you the strength to stand firm in your faith.  The choice does belong to you and only you.

Be Blessed,
Rich

37 Days – He Prunes for New Growth

Pastor Randy’s devotional:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and He prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.” John 15:1-3

January 10th Prayer:
Father, thank You that You cut away every thinking pattern, relationship, and activity that no longer produces good fruit. I am excited to know that You are working in me to produce more fruit. And so, I trust You to take away anything, no matter how painful, that keeps me from producing good fruit. Holy Spirit, I open to You now to bring to mind any activity, thought, sin, relationship, or use of my time that You desire to cut. I trust You and thank You for pruning me . . . in Jesus’ name!

(Write down the things the Holy Spirit brings to mind.)

My thoughts:
Do you still struggle with that sin?  You know, the one you never talk about with your friends or family, but it consistently pulls at you, draws you in and tempts you.  We are all bound in this human flesh, which in and of itself is sinful, and therefore prone to the temptations of this world.  We are not immune to the lusts, the addictions, the anger, the envy and jealousy, the words, the actions and the pride that are so prevalent in this world.  There is one, though, who faced these temptations and overcame them all.  He stood upon the strength of His Father in heaven and turned from them by focusing upon God’s plan and God’s provision.  You have that same ability, if you so indeed to take advantage of it.

As hard as you try to will yourself to be “better” and not fall into that trap again, you alone are incapable.  Your straight jacket discipline is unable to stand against the evil in this world.  The people, the activities, thoughts and sins that are pervasive here will quickly envelope your defenses.  Unless you reach for the One who has been tested and found Holy against the evil one.  Jesus Christ came in order to set you free from these sins and relationships.  By leaning into Him and drawing upon His authority and strength you can also be found an overcomer.

As we discussed yesterday – there will be pain in cutting away some of these habits and relationships.  But, at the end of the journey, the strength that will be built up in you, and the path that you find yourself walking on will be much more in line with God’s plan and less aligned with the world’s plan.  Your objective is to grow in your walk, in your faith and in your life’s purpose for God.  Looking carefully at those things in your life that separate you from God, I ask that you sit down right now and lift them up to Jesus in prayer.  Asking Him for the wisdom and courage to cut those things that are not benefitting your walk and to focus more heartily on those things that will allow you thrive in the Lord.  This new year of 2018 is your year to reset your direction on a path serving the Lord in all areas of your life.  Take this small step today on that new journey.

Be Blessed,
Rich

A Daily Walk

If you were asked about the greatest sin in your life, what would it be?

Adultery, Pornography, Lying, Stealing, Hatred, Greed, Anger, Envy, Self-Righteousness, Murder, Drugs, Drinking, Abuse, Homosexuality, Blasphemy, Cursing, Gambling, Selfishness and Pride; just too name a few.  You must all agree that these are all sinful actions against a Holy and Perfect God, and this is just off the top of my head.  If Jesus Christ came to die as the propitiation for the sins of all men, as stated in 1 Peter 3:18; “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit”; then who are we to say that one of these sins is greater than the other.  For in saying this, then one must expect that there is another action coming by which the greater of these sins is washed away.  Otherwise we have limited and minimized the saving grace offered up by the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Do you then believe that Christ died for your sins (some of those mentioned above), so that you can spend eternity with Him and the Father in heaven; but this same act (Christ’s death) is not sufficient to cover other sins mentioned above?  If your belief is true, than have you not place limitations on the saving grace of our Lord?  Salvation comes from belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, but coupled with the act of repentance.  This means sin no more.  Jesus told the woman caught in adultery; “And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.””  {John 8:11}  We must acknowledge our sinful actions and turn from them, relying on and trusting in the strength of the Lord to overcome our weak flesh and desire to continue in our sin.  This is true with every sin.

Accept that only through the Holy Spirit can we take hold of our addictions, our transgressions and turn away from them.  This goes for the simplest of sinful action to the greatest.  Continuing in our sinful action suggests that we are still holding onto our fleshly desires rather than repenting of them.  We all have sinned, yes, even you; and must decide if we will continue in our sin or walk from it.  Our choice in this matter says a lot about our desire to live for God Almighty or to live for ourselves.  Before we condemn another in their sinful action, perhaps we should all take a very good look at our own, and where we are in overcoming them.  This is a daily walk with the Lord close by your side to help overcome our weaknesses.

The Heart Knows

Make 2014 a year for sharing

“But now your {Saul} kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him {David} as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”” – 1 Samuel 13:14

David was appointed King of Israel by God through Samuel in 1 Samuel 16.  He was the youngest son of Jesse the Bethlehemite.  Jesse had seven other sons, all of whom had the strength and stature of a King, but the Lord did not choose any of them.  Instead the Lord, chose the smallest, the humble, the youngest of the brothers and said “This is the one”.  In 1 Samuel 16:7 the Lord tells Samuel, ““Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

The Lord sees in your heart.  He knows the truth of your character, not as man sees it based on your outward appearance and the words from your lips, but from your inner being, your thoughts and your spirit.  We all put on a mask of righteousness at the appropriate times and attempt to convince ourselves and others that we are holy and abiding in God’s purpose.  We may be able to fool man into believing our holiness, but what difference does that make, for man cannot secure you a place in God’s Kingdom.  Only God’s Son can do that and He knows all about the real person inside of your fleshly appearance.

David was not a perfect, righteous person; as we well know.  He was an adulterer and a murderer, as documented in the scriptures.  But, he is the only man whom God labeled as “a man after My own heart”.  David’s love for God was unmatched by any man, other than Jesus Christ himself.  David recognized that his flesh was weak and that his nature was to sin, but he also realized the most important part of life.  David recognized that his sinful nature on this earth was not a sin against man, but a sin against God Almighty.  He realized that he must repent before the Lord, for all of his iniquities and be reconciled to God only, for his transgressions.

David, like you and I, was born of sin.  We are incapable of living a life without sin and imperfections.  As much as we try to live a perfect life we are only fooling ourselves, for God knows your thoughts and inner feelings as well.  Every thought of lust, anger, vengeance, greed, pride or power separates you from His required perfection.  In your life, if you have had only one thought of unrighteousness, you have separated yourself from God Almighty forever.  For He demands perfection, and complete holiness.  This is impossible for you and I, and every other person to walk this earth, including David.  The only exception was Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived a perfectly holy, righteous life and went to the cross faultless and worthy of God’s Kingdom.  His death on the cross is the sacrifice required for our sin filled lives.  Every sin of mankind was put upon Him at that time and forever more.  There will never be a need for another sacrifice, for in that one event God settled it once and for all.  We are not expected to live a perfect, holy life; but we are expected to come before the Lord, with Jesus Christ as our mediator and repent of our unrighteousness, and be reconciled to His purpose and holiness.  Do not turn from the Lord in fear and avoidance, but come to Him with a heart filled with the desire to serve Him and bring Him glory.  Your actions will follow your heart if indeed you seek Him first, just as David did.

Sodom’s Got Nothing on Us

Make 2014 a year of Sharing

“For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.” – Isaiah 34:2

We are captivated by the love of God and the mercies He has bestowed upon us.  We look at the end of the world and think little about the incredible wrath, death and destruction that will take place.  Through His Son, Jesus Christ, God has provided a sacrifice for mankind to lay claim to, yet the bible is clear, His wrath will be poured out upon the earth.  How long will He continue to be patient?  If we look at the immorality, the debauchery, the complete disregard for His supreme authority that is taking place in this world today; can the end be too far away?

When Abraham argued with God over the salvation of Sodom and Gomorrah there is scriptural evidence of the unrighteousness and sinful lives of those living there.  Abraham argued that if only 10 righteous could be found there, than God would have spared the entire cities. (Gen 18:)  To no avail, we know the story that God reigned down burning sulfur and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.  What makes you believe that Armageddon will be any less spectacular?

Those that oppose the Lord and His outpouring of love for mankind will suffer the damnation and hell that is promised in the scriptures.  Make no mistake.  His love is unmeasurable, and this is why He has given you and I the opportunity for salvation.  Just as the angels came to Sodom and took Lot and his family away before the destruction, Jesus Christ has come to provide a sanctuary for you from the coming wrath of the Lord.

What is happening around you is nothing short of what was happening in Sodom in those days.  The 10 Commandments hold little value in the eyes of the masses.  Adultery and lust, murder, stealing, lying, jealousy, day of rest, respect, idolatry, cursing and the blatant denial of the one and only God Almighty, is commonplace in today’s world.  Is there anything that tells us that these laws are no longer valid, no longer applicable?  We have chosen to ignore them and apply them loosely to our own lives, no different than the children of Israel who wandered in the desert for 40 years and never saw the Promised Land of Canaan.  He gave us His law because it is righteous and good, not as a suggestion, but as the law of the Lord Jehovah.

Yes, Jesus Christ’s blood is an atonement for our sinful actions and thoughts.  This is a fact that we all rely upon so that we may be redeemed to our God and live holy and righteous in heaven one day.  The lack of repentance, turning from our sin, though should require us to carefully evaluate our spiritual commitment and salvation.  As Jesus Christ told the woman caught in adultery, ““Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”  We love the fact that Christ forgives our sins, and washes us clean, but we often forget the second part of His statement – ”Go and sin no more.”

I don’t know if God’s judgment day is tomorrow, next week, or 20 years from now.  The reality of it is that He will come to judge all mankind; every one of us.  You have no way to avoid it.  If you sincerely believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, than you must believe His words are 100% truth.  This means everything He said in the scriptures will come to fruition and woe to the man who does not hear.  As we start this New Year of 2014, I highly recommend you check yourself; your desires, your wants, your lusts, your passion, your sins and take them to the Lord in prayer now.  Lay them on the table and ask for Him to help you overcome these things this year.  Make this your New Years resolution, and forget about the whole diet fad of the century.  I promise when your 6 feet under, nobody is going to care if you had high cholesterol or not.  This flesh body we have has no future in eternity, perhaps our goals and resolutions should have more of an eternal impact.

Stepping out of the Fire

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It

“Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”  - Mark 3:28-29

I woke up this morning and I once again sinned against the Father.  In numerous ways throughout the day my heart is filled with different emotions and judgment against others in the world and against myself.  If I were sitting on the Great White Throne and judging my own eternal fate, I can assure you I would be destined for eternal Hell. The scriptures tell us that the very thought can be as sin, and not just the action.  The mind sins before the lips speak, or the feet take to the street.  The truth of what I speak is that we are all condemned to the lake of fire, based on any number of sinful actions every day.  How many sins does it take to send you to Hell?  One.  Yes, only one.  God accepts nothing but pure perfection and righteousness.  In any given day I am going to commit no less than 300 sins (1 about every 5 minutes or so).  If I live to be 80 years old, I will have committed 8.76 million sins.  I, therefore, will stand before God on that judgment day, and in be required to provide an answer for every one of them.  Yes, every single one of them, from the least to the greatest.  What can I do?  What possible righteous acts must I execute, and how many righteous acts, then to overcome this mountain of sin?

Romans 3:9-11 tells us, “
There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands;  there is no one who seeks God” I am not righteous, you are not righteous, your parents, your children, your neighbor, Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Phil Robertson; none of them.  There has been only one person in the History of the world that was righteous, and that was the Son of God, Himself.  It’s not a matter of how great the sin, it is a matter of being outside of the righteousness of God’s perfection.  You may have committed adultery, you may have murdered, you may have been an alcoholic, you may be a homosexual, you may be suffering from drug addictions, you may have anger problems, you may have lied to your parents or stolen a piece of candy from the store; the list of sinful actions outside of God’s righteousness is endless.  All are forgivable through the saving grace of our Lord, through His provision of a sacrifice.  That sacrifice is His Son – Jesus Christ.

Despite the depth of depravity of your sin in life, in His loving grace, you are still worthy of salvation, with the exception of those who have blasphemed the Holy Spirit.  This is the only unforgivable sin.  But, to those who call upon His name and acknowledge Him as Savior and Lord, they will be saved and their sins will be washed away.  The act of giving your life to Jesus Christ though requires your commitment to Him as your Lord, not just as a get out of jail free card.  It requires your repentance from your sinful life, which means turning away from that which separates you from Him.  Continuing in your sin with no desire for becoming more Christ-like is outside of accepting Him as the Lord of your life, and should cause one to carefully question the truth of their salvation.  It is completely between you and the Lord to reconcile your sinful actions and lifestyle, but I offer only this advice – do not take this lightly for the ramifications of your perceived salvation is eternal.

Acts 4:11-13 tells us, “
Salvation is found in no one else {Jesus}, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Many will deny Jesus Christ, claim that He was a prophet, a nice man, a carpenter or even a lunatic.  Others will claim He never existed, and claim the whole salvation story as nothing more than a fable.  To this group of individuals, their fate is determined by their choices and arrogance, for they have no other means to reconcile the sins that exist in their life each and every day.  It is them that I will pray for this year, as I make out my list of resolutions for 2014.  If you are willing and committed to serving God in this world and the next, than consider your role in this purpose as well.

Heal you? Are you sure?

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It

“"When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?""
                                                                                   - John 5:6

The door handles in the old Chevy had long been broken and 2 of the windows no longer roll down. The seat belts are in knots and there are cigarette burns all over the upholstery. As the young couple look at the car they had just drove onto the lot and then look at the rows and rows of new cars. The salesman walks over and what are the first words from his mouth, "What can I do for you today?" ahhh, duh...it seems quite obvious doesn't it.

Have you noticed that Jesus had a tendency to ask this or similar questions prior to many of his miracles? To the blind man, "What will you have me do?" ; to the boy with the fish and loves, "How many do you have?"; or to the woman caught in adultery, "Woman, where are your accusers?" Rhetorical questions from the Almighty, or something deeper?   I propose that it was something deeper. He could have easily cast out the demons, healed the sick and lame, and brought love to the accused without even saying a word.

No, there was a purpose to everything that Jesus said and this was no different. First, these events in the public’s eye were teaching opportunities. Having the individual publicly acknowledge their faith in God for healing and salvation demonstrated to all those observing the need for faith. Furthermore, it demonstrated the relationship between Jesus Christ and man-kind, that we can ask anything and with belief and faith in the Son of God, it will come to pass.

Secondly, I propose that Jesus was truly asking them if they truly wanted to leave their old ways. We all have the opportunity to bring our weakness', shortcomings and sinful nature to Jesus for healing. Yet, for some reason we choose not to, or we give it lip service and inside really want to hang on to it. I know someone who struggles with pornography, and is angry with God for not removing the temptation from his life. Yet he is the one moving the mouse and typing the URL to go to those places. He may have asked to be rid of his sinful nature, but I can picture Jesus Christ standing behind him, looking over his shoulder saying, "Do you want to be healed?" Deep inside it is unlikely that he truly wants to give it up.

Prayers are said with the best intentions in mind, but unless our heart and our mind are in sync with the request, in James 4:3 we discover "You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you might spend it on your pleasures." He's asking you, "Do you truly want to be healed?" Let your heart and mind come together with a solid "Yes". He's shown us numerous times in the scriptures where He will give to those with pure intentions. We can't have it both ways folks. Commit to the Lord and turn away from your sins and He will deliver upon His promises.

PRAYER:
Father,
Your word is clear Lord that you are desiring our full commitment. As we learn from this scripture to search ourselves and our true intent before coming to You in prayer, help us to reach that place. Build within each of us the desire and courage to look at our sinful nature with the direct purpose to be rid of it and serve You wholeheartedly. Strengthen our resolve Lord to not hold onto those things that prevent us from being in full service to You. Break the bonds of satan on our lives that we might rejoice with You in fulfilling our desires. For it is through the power of Your Son- Jesus Christ that we are redeemed and made whole again. - Amen
