Bible Study – James (day 18)

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It

”Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16

I’ll pray for you.”, we often say to one another.  Are you the one who actually puts that person’s name on a list and makes a point to pray for them, are you the one who says it just to be nice?  Prayer, on the surface, seems senseless to some who refuse to acknowledge the very presence of God in our lives.  The Creator of the universe, Father of all things and Lord of our lives, hears your prayers.

Biblically speaking; we have numerous examples of those that have gone before us falling to their knees or lying prostrate and lifting their voices to the Lord in prayer and petition.  In the following verses James gives us examples of Elijah praying for no rain, and it didn’t rain for 3 years and 6 months, until he prayed again for rain.  Elijah watched others pray to their god Baal for 12 hours and nothing happened.  Elijah then prayed to God for fire to come down from heaven and it did.  He did this to glorify God’s name and authority before all those watching. (see 1 Kings 18).

Does God’s power heal?  Is there anything that you pray for that God could not deliver if He so chose to deliver to you?  We are weak and waiver in our faith, because we approach God with apprehension and doubt, based on our human thoughts and mindset.  When we realize that God is the Creator of everything we see, feel and touch; we soon realize that nothing is outside of His authority.  Numerous times throughout the bible God tells us to come to Him in prayer and supplication in all things great and small.  He will answer according to His will.  We get discouraged when we don’t get the things we ask for, but we don’t realize or want to acknowledge that God is sovereign and knows what we truly need before we even ask.

James tells us that we must be right with God though.  A sinful heart and mind stands between you and the Almighty perfect God.  We must right ourselves with God and our fellow man where sin exists before we enter into the presence of God and experience His will in our life.  We can’t be perfect, or spotless or sin free.  It is an impossibility for man.  Therefore we must come before the throne of the One who was spotless and perfect – the Son of God – Jesus Christ.  With confession of our sins and repenting from our ways we are capable of redemption through the blood of the lamb.  With our righteousness in hand, we are then able to come before the Lord in earnest prayer and communion.

ACTION: Acknowledge His presence in all your ways.  Make known that He is the authority in your life, and that through His grace you are set free from the bondage of sin and unrighteousness.  Seek His forgiveness through the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ and walk no longer in that sin.  Bring your petitions and prayers before the Lord and be willing to accept His answer, for He alone is sovereign over all things.  Now – do these things now, there is no reason to wait until later.
