“But when He {Holy Spirit}, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.  He will glorify Me {Jesus}, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.” – John 16:13-15

His eyes are blue, his hair is blond and he has a dimple on his left cheek just like his father.  As they walk down the city street people comment on their likeness and point out the obvious genetic similarities.  Over time I have been reminded of the strong tie between a father and a son.  There are many songs out there about relationships, but there is one that has always stuck in my mind “Watching You” from Rodney Atkins.  There is always an underlying connection to your past, your lineage and heritage.  Each of us pick up tendencies and traits from our parents, whether we choose to or not.  Our mannerisms, our words, our actions and our character have a history despite our age.  A four year old child has a history within his DNA that carries back generations and has a blueprint for who he will become throughout his lifetime.  We didn’t put it there, the Creator did when he created us in our mother’s womb.  

As your life evolves and unfolds before the presence of mankind and your Creator you become more and more in control of those elements though.  There are things in your past that inject negative thinking, unrighteousness, addictions and dependencies into your persona.  There are things which have you believe that you are not worthy of love, of joy and happiness, of compassion and God’s grace.  The beauty of it is that you can choose to break those bonds from your past that are unrighteous and demeaning and pursue those that are from the Father above. 

You can draw from the Father of mankind the very spirit that was within Jesus Christ as He walked the earth.  The very spirit that He told the disciples would remain behind when He went to the Father.  The Counselor, the Spirit, the Helper will live within you and guide your footsteps if you so desire and allow Him to.  He is in the Father and the Father is in Him, so as you draw closer to Him, you will take on His characteristics of righteousness, love, peace, grace, compassion and purpose.  He will indwell within you to teach you, to convict you and to purpose you towards the Father’s glory and righteousness.

As much as you try to live righteously on your own, you cannot.  Your DNA and heritage from your father and his father and so on and so on.  Your human genes are flawed all the way back to Noah and Adam.  Yet, the Holy Spirit brings life anew and brings about repentance and rebirth into a new life with God the Father, thereby breaking the bondage of your past.  You can’t change your DNA, but you can make a choice to re-energize and re-purpose it, and in doing so leave a legacy for your children that will shine a different light on their path.
