No Excuses

You are His Ambassador

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” – Romans 15:7

The driver never saw him.  Every day he drove the same path home at night and every day the man was sitting along the side of the road.  His jeans torn, hole in his left shoe, a beard that I’m sure hadn’t been shaved, cleaned or combed in 5 years or more.  His eyes were sunken in his aged leather face, overshadowing the bluest eyes ever seen and his baldness was covered by an old John Deere hat that was tattered around the edges.  The driver passed right by him again on this cold winter day to pull into the drive thru at Starbucks and get his grande-extra hot-double Expresso Latte with light foam.

As he pulled to the window, the girl slid the glass open and looked down into his Mercedes Benz.  Her dark black eye makeup, pierced lip, pierced eyebrow and nose drew his attention once again, but today the red and blue streaks in her hair caught him by surprise as she reached her fully tattooed arm towards him for his American Express, in exchange for his cup of coffee.  Shaking his head he drove away from the Starbucks and merged back into the traffic which separated him from his 6,000 square foot home in the ‘burbs and his martini by the fire.

Periodically, he would weave out into the oncoming traffic as he tried to pass that large Suburban in front of him; but to no avail.  He could see the dual DVD players in the car playing different cartoons for the children in the back seats.  Every now and then he would see one of them hit the other and he would see the Mom turn around from her driver’s position and try to calm the problem, as she cradled her cell-phone near her ear.  Finally, the opportunity cleared and he whipped his car out into the left lane as he attempted to pass.  Looking into her drivers window, he saw her face.  The tears had caused her mascara to leave streaks down her cheeks, as she tried to adjust her disheveled hair to save complete embarrassment to his gaze.

He exited into his subdivision, and pulled up to the security gate.  The afternoon guard gave him a nod from behind his small glass cube, and the gate slowly opened.  Looking at the guard, he realized that something was definitely wrong as he saw a second guard behind the window with his fingers pointing at the man’s chest.  At that moment the first guard slowly removed his badge and handed it over to the more aggressive man.  Not to be bothered by it, our driver proceeded through the gate and up the long driveway to his home.  Parking the Mercedes in garage number 2 (of 7) he closed the door behind him and walked into the large empty home for the night.

In every city, in every state, in every country around the globe similar things happen every single day.  We live, but we don’t see.  We see, but we don’t care.  We care, but we don’t act.  We act when it benefits us.  These are God’s children we see all around us.  We claim to be His child, yet offer no love or compassion to our brother or sister.  We are comfortable with Jesus as our Savior, but are we comfortable giving Him our life and making Him our Lord?  The blood that was shed, was not uniquely for you or for me, but for all of mankind.  Is it our right to refuse to offer the same love and compassion, that He poured out for us, to a stranger?  We are His feet, we are His hands, we are His eyes, we are His church.  We (you and me) have a responsibility to share His gospel, His truth, His love with everyone we meet.

Have you seen others in need?  What stops you from being Jesus to them? .  Jesus didn’t come to help the Pharisees, but the prostitutes, leapers, sick and poor.  Stop with the excuses and start with the action.  Let them see Christ, for it may be the first time, and it may be just in time.  For if tomorrow, the man is not on the corner, and the girl is not at the window, and the mother gives up on her family and the guard is not behind the glass; will you get another shot?  You are an ambassador for the living God and you need to take part in this experience of life.  Quit judging them and start loving them.  Start with your own home and work out from there, but start today.

He's Alive

Continuing to celebrate the Resurrection

“So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”” – John 20:2

I was 17 years old sitting in a parking lot at Meijer’s Thrifty Acres in Adrian, Mi.  It was Easter weekend and I was feeling very guilty about not loving my Savior as much as He loved me.  I was listening to WMUZ (103.5) and this song came on the radio.  I felt like Peter, and the tears flowed that night.  I felt guilt, shame, anguish and fear.  By the end of the song, I knew that no matter what God’s love for me would never change and I recommitted my life right then and there.  Here I am 32 years later and my 23 year old daughter and 10 year old daughter are walking around the house singing the very same song.  The tears are just as real today as they were then, as I think about all the times I’ve turned my back on my Lord out of fear, embarrassment or peer pressure.  I am so sorry Jesus.

The gates and doors were barred, all the windows fastened down
Spent the night in sleeplessness, and rose at every sound.
Half in hopeless sorry, Half in fear the day

We’d find the soldiers breaking through to drag us all away.

Just before the sunrise, I heard something at the wall.
The gate began to rattle and a voice began to call.
I hurried to the window, looked down into the street
Expecting swords and torches and the sounds of soldiers feet.

There was no one there but Mary, so I went down to let her in.
John stood there beside me, as she told us where she’d been.
“Someone moved him in the night and none of us know where,
the stone’s been rolled away and his body isn’t there.”

We both ran toward the garden, then John ran on ahead.
We found the stone and the empty tomb, just the way that Mary said.
The winding sheet they wrapped him in was just an empty shell.
How or where they’d taken him was more than I could tell.

Something strange had happened there, just what I did not know.
John believed a miracle, but I just turned to go.
Circumstance and speculation, couldn’t lift me very high
I’d seen them crucify him, and then I saw him die.

Back inside the house again, the guilt and anguish came.
Everything I’d promised him just added to my shame.
When at last it came the choices, I denied I knew his name.
Even if he was alive, it wouldn’t be the same.

Suddenly the air was filled with strange and sweet perfume.
Light the came from everywhere drove shadows from the room
Jesus stood beside me with His arms held open wide
I fell down to my knees, and clung to Him and cried.

He raised me to my feet, and when I looked into His eyes
Love was shining out from Him like sunlight from the skies
Guilt and my confusion, disappeared with sweet release
Every fear I’d ever had just melted into peace

He’s Alive – He’s Alive
He’s Alive and I’m forgiven, heaven’s gates are open wide
He’s Alive – He’s Alive
He’s alive and I’m forgiven, heaven’s gates are open wide
He’s Alive – He’s Alive

Let Him Help You

Make 2014 a year for sharing

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”– Psalm 139:23-24

What was your very last thought before you began reading this Daily Thought?  Have you ever considered that every thought, those uttered and those kept silent are captured by the Holy Spirit within. When I think about God searching my heart and mind, I immediately think of all of the junk that I keep inside and the natural tendency is to quickly go through and clean it up in hopes that He won’t notice it.  What foolishness is this kind of thinking?  God knew those thoughts the moment they entered my mind and were captured in my heart.  It’s completely impossible for me to hide my thoughts, my feelings, my wickedness from the One who created me.

I think that is the key point of this prayer from King David.  Our human frailty is weak in avoiding temptations, dealing with anxiousness, worry and anger.  Yet we try to clean up our own mess as if we have the will power and strength of our own accord.  The Holy Spirit, is God living inside of you.  He has authority over all things, including the thoughts and actions of our heart and mind.  It’s not enough to uncover the unrighteousness, we must be able to eliminate it, so that when we look in the mirror every morning, it is His image we see.  The important thing to accept though is that you cannot eliminate this by yourself, you need God handling this for you.

Most people have a perception of God as someone who demands we be perfectly clean before we can approach Him.  The underlying truth is that God does demand perfection to enter into heaven, but the reality is that we cannot clean ourselves up enough to receive His acceptance.  We must rely on Him to clean us and work within us to obtain this perfection.  There is the catch 22.  He demands perfection, yet we can only become perfect when He is working in us. This is where the Holy Spirit enters into the picture as the comforter, the counselor and teacher.  We are saved by the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, and our sins are forgiven.  The Holy Spirit came upon you at your salvation and dwells inside of you as a constant reminder of God’s loving grace and redemption.

That still small voice of right and wrong, convicting you of the wickedness that resides in each of us, and bringing you to the Lord for forgiveness.  The Holy Spirit, God within you, is the One by which your faith is strengthened and your path is made straight.  This is not of anything you have done, but Him working through you.  Oh certainly, you will have to take action and recognize your wickedness, but alone you cannot eliminate it.  Trust in God’s hand upon your life.  Believe that He is with you always and wants to help you clean out the dark corners of your heart.  Open your heart today with this prayer of David and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the unrighteousness to you.  There is no guilt, no shame nor condemnation in the Lord.  He loves you, and through this love has provided the Holy Spirit for you to walk daily with.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father
,
Thank You for providing redemption, salvation and reconciliation for Your children.  We look to the Holy Spirit as our guide and our counselor, the One to recognize our wickedness.  Help us to follow His lead and partake in Your loving grace.  Open my soul, and search me Lord.  Give me the strength to overcome my weakness, the thorn in my side, and to cleanse my heart.  I seek You as my righteousness and long to enter into Your perfect kingdom through the blood of Jesus Christ, my Savior.  In Your precious name I pray.  Amen

He Came Back

Celebrating His Resurrection

“Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled."”- Luke 24:44

There are 365 days in a year (according to the current calendar).  Each day you could wake up and read 1 scripture a day about Jesus Christ, written before He was ever born into this world.  The great authors of the Old Testament – Isaiah, Daniel, Hosea, Moses, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and many others prophesied and foretold the Messiah’s coming, His life, death, resurrection and second coming.  Over 365 prophecies have been written pertaining to the Son of God, which Jesus Christ has single handedly fulfilled.

The Pharisees of the day knew of the prophets, and their writings.  They knew the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, would be from the line of David, would be from Galilee, would be born of a virgin, would be beaten beyond recognition, be enter Jerusalem on a donkey, betrayed for 30 pieces of silver and suffer a violent death.  This only represents 8 prophecies of the Messiah, captured in the scriptures which were known to all Pharisees and Scribes of that day.  Through their diligent studies they knew what they were looking for in their coming Messiah.  The reality though is that they were blinded by their own humanity, and could never imagine that this young man from humble beginnings could be their ever powerful, almighty and omnipotent God in flesh.  Their arrogance and knowledge blinded them from the incredible presence right before them.

They had to ask themselves though, with all of their wisdom, could this be the One.  Then they would see Him do something that would contradict their simple minded knowledge of who Messiah should be, and they would then judge Him.  He healed on the Sabbath, He dined with sinners, He kept company with prostitutes, tax collectors and thieves.  He preached the gospel with a depth of knowledge beyond theirs, yet had not studied in their presence or through the universities of the time.  He chastised them for their piousness, arrogance and hypocrisy, while loving those who were poor, meek and gentile.

Why did the Pharisees ensure that the Romans guarded the tomb?  Because of Isaiah 53:9-12; “when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.”  They knew that if Jesus rose from the grave that they had made a terrible mistake, and that indeed they had been in the presence of the very Son of God they had so patiently awaited.  Paul, the Apostle, was a Pharisee, who was struck blind by the Resurrected Jesus, and through his conversion became the greatest apostle of all.  Throughout the book of Acts, we see several other Pharisees turned to follow Jesus through the preaching of Paul and Peter.

So I ask you; look amongst our nations today and see who are the Pharisees of this age?  Well studied men of God, blind to the real issues of the day, and the love that Jesus Christ stands for.  You can see how easy it is to have read the scriptures, studied the prophecies and still potentially miss Him when He returns because we are looking for something specific.  Make no doubt about it, Jesus Christ will return just as He said He would.  For by His very words to the disciples after His resurrection: all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”  Do not overlook the Word of God as you watch the heavens for His return.  Study it, know it and spend time with the Father learning it.

The Change Agent

Expanding the Kingdom one day at a time

“But when He {Holy Spirit}, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.  He will glorify Me {Jesus}, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.” – John 16:13-15

His eyes are blue, his hair is blond and he has a dimple on his left cheek just like his father.  As they walk down the city street people comment on their likeness and point out the obvious genetic similarities.  Over time I have been reminded of the strong tie between a father and a son.  There are many songs out there about relationships, but there is one that has always stuck in my mind “Watching You” from Rodney Atkins.  There is always an underlying connection to your past, your lineage and heritage.  Each of us pick up tendencies and traits from our parents, whether we choose to or not.  Our mannerisms, our words, our actions and our character have a history despite our age.  A four year old child has a history within his DNA that carries back generations and has a blueprint for who he will become throughout his lifetime.  We didn’t put it there, the Creator did when he created us in our mother’s womb.

As your life evolves and unfolds before the presence of mankind and your Creator you become more and more in control of those elements though.  There are things in your past that inject negative thinking, unrighteousness, addictions and dependencies into your persona.  There are things which have you believe that you are not worthy of love, of joy and happiness, of compassion and God’s grace.  The beauty of it is that you can choose to break those bonds from your past that are unrighteous and demeaning and pursue those that are from the Father above.

You can draw from the Father of mankind the very spirit that was within Jesus Christ as He walked the earth.  The very spirit that He told the disciples would remain behind when He went to the Father.  The Counselor, the Spirit, the Helper will live within you and guide your footsteps if you so desire and allow Him to.  He is in the Father and the Father is in Him, so as you draw closer to Him, you will take on His characteristics of righteousness, love, peace, grace, compassion and purpose.  He will indwell within you to teach you, to convict you and to purpose you towards the Father’s glory and righteousness.

As much as you try to live righteously on your own, you cannot.  Your DNA and heritage from your father and his father and so on and so on.  Your human genes are flawed all the way back to Noah and Adam.  Yet, the Holy Spirit brings life anew and brings about repentance and rebirth into a new life with God the Father, thereby breaking the bondage of your past.  You can’t change your DNA, but you can make a choice to re-energize and re-purpose it, and in doing so leave a legacy for your children that will shine a different light on their path.

The Free Slave

Today I am sharing a sermonette of rich value from Paris Reidhead, that I hope you enjoy as much as I have.

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1

Paris Reidhead
-       Excerpt from “So Great Salvation” by Paris Reidhead

Years ago an Englishman had made his fortune in the gold fields in California. He was returning to England to live. He forwarded his wealth to London and came overland by stage and river steamer to New Orleans. From there he planned to take a ship to New York and from there to England.
As a tourist in New Orleans he did as most tourists do; he went down to the slave market. In the early 1850's slaves were still being sold in New Orleans and elsewhere in the South. It was a noisy, active market. Men were gathered observing a young, very beautiful black woman who was up for bid. He heard the men's comments as they were speaking about her. He saw two evil looking men bidding for her, quite heatedly, and then he overheard them say what they would do with her. His heart revolted against the whole swinish business.

Finally, as the bids rose higher and more frenzied, he beckoned to the auctioneer and quoted a figure which was exactly twice the last bid, utterly beyond anything that had ever been paid for a slave in New Orleans before.

The auctioneer said, "Have you the money?" "Yes, I have." So the bill of sale was made out. The Englishman went over to the block to claim the woman he had purchased. As she came down one step and stood just about level with his eyes, she spat full in his face and hissed through her clenched teeth, "I hate you."

He said nothing. With the back of his hand he wiped the spittle away. Then he took her by the hand, walked down the street, through the mud, and down another street. Finally they came to a little office building. She couldn't read and didn't know what the building was.

The Englishman went to the desk and began to speak. The man behind the desk began to protest. Ignoring the agent's protests, the Englishman said, "I insist. It's the law. I insist."
Finally, after the business transaction was completed, the Englishman received a paper with an official seal. He then walked over to the black woman, who was like a beast ready to spring on him. He extended the paper to her. "Here are your manumission papers. You are free."

Still she hissed, "I hate you." "Don't you understand? Here are your manumission papers. You are free."
"No, I don't understand. You paid twice as much for me as any buyer in the New Orleans market, now you are giving me my freedom. I don't believe you."

"Yes, these are your manumission papers, signed and officially sealed." And he put them in her hand. "Do you mean to say that you bought me to set me free?" "Yes, that is why I bought you; to set you free."

Tears came up into her eyes. Her face softened, and then she slipped to her knees and reached down and put her hands on those rough miner's boots, and then laid her cheek down on the toe of one of them. Through her tears she sobbed, "You bought me to set me free; you bought me to set me free. You paid an exorbitant price just to set me free!"

Then she choked through her tears, "Sir, all I want in life is to be your slave. You bought me, to set me FREE."
Listen, the Lord Jesus Christ bought you, to set you free. When you comprehend that it's the joy of your life to be His bondslave forever. He bought you. He bought you to set you free, not only from hell, but from the world and the flesh and the devil.

Some Will be Lost

Make 2014 a year of Sharing

“For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.” – Matthew 24:27

They gathered in the park as the sun rested behind the treeline.  The air was cold and the dew was fresh on the ground as they moved through the crowds.  Some were lying, some sitting, but many were standing in the darkness.  The young man wandered through the crowd in an urgent fashion as if looking for someone specific amidst the thousands of individuals.  A woman covered in a blanket stopped him for just a moment and motioned for him to slow down and offered to help.  He had lost his son amidst the crowd.  He and his wife had split up to find him, but they had been searching for over an hour and couldn’t find him anywhere.  She escorted him through the crowds to the top of the hill.  There was a pedestal raised there and he climbed up the 30 foot tower.

From the top he could look out over the throngs of people amassed in the park that morning.  It was still hard to see, as there was little light and there were just so many gathered.  In his attempt to find his son, he saw his wife frantically asking everyone she ran into.  Then he saw her stop, raise her hands to her lips and proceed to follow an older woman quickly through the crowded pathway.  His eyes moved ahead of her toward the treeline where they were targeting.  The sun was just beginning to create a silver lining over the trees, as the sky became a mosaic tapestry of purple, pink, blues and black.  Along the shadows of the trees was a line of people kneeling with their hands raised.  A muffled buzz could be heard at first, but then it started to spread back towards his pedestal as the murmuring took on the sound of worship.  Words became clear as prayers were lifted in the morning hour as the sun broke the plane.

There he was.  In his red jacket and ball cap, he was kneeling at the front edge of the mass of people.  His hands were raised, his head lowered as he swayed back and forth with those around him.  From the father’s position above the tower, he watched as his wife broke through the crowd and ran to his son’s side.  Then he watched as his son ignored his wife and continued in worship and praise, despite her attempt to hug him.  As she turned to look she likewise fell to her knees, her arms raised and began to worship.  Then a light flashed across the sky and left the man blinded for a moment.

After several moments he was able to once again open his eyes and see.  He could hear screaming and crying as he came to his senses.  He regained his balance and looked back to the treeline, now awash with the brightness of the morning sun.  As he focused his attention on the spot where his son and wife were kneeling, he nearly fell from the tower upon which he stood.  He saw his son’s red coat and ballcap lying on the grass right next to his wife’s blue sweatshirt and jeans.  The thousands of people in the park were now down to a few hundred holding clothes in their hands and looking around wondering what just happened. He hurried down from the tower and ran through the crowd to where his son was kneeling.

As he approached, he could confirm that indeed it was his child’s coat and clothes lying in a pile next to his wife’s.  In confusion and fear he gathered the clothes and looked around for an answer.  He was not alone.  The people left standing in the park wandered aimlessly looking for someone who knew what was going on.  Then he realized what he had witnessed, and he turned back to the spot.  He ran through his memory of the last 10 minutes and remembers seeing his son kneeling, then watching his wife fall to her knees with arms raised; both worshiping alongside others.  Those who were worshiping were now missing. The Son had come and taken them home.  Jesus Christ had just raptured His church.

As the thought set in, he fell to his knees and wept into the clothes of his loved ones.  What had he done?  What must he now do?  What happens next?

Demand It

Make 2014 a year of Sharing

“Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.” – Psalm 103:1

When you wake up and dread the day – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When you’re feeling lonely and lost the way – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When the love is gone and you want to cry – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When the news is bad and your anger’s high – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When you’ve lost your job and fear sets in – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When you can’t break free from the recurring sin – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When the one you love has passed away – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When depression sets in and you just can’t pray – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When the car won’t start and you’re running late – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.
When your patience is thin and you just can’t wait – tell your soul to Bless the Lord.

I believe you see the pattern here without me being so obvious.  This is not a life free of trouble or anger or strife or temptations, but it is a life that can be centered on something greater than your day to day trials.  The Lord is in control of all things and is worthy to be blessed regardless of the circumstances.  David was being pursued by armies and assassins throughout much of his life, simply because he followed the calling of God on his life.  In all things, good and bad, David was grounded in his understanding that his only authority in life was God Almighty and that despite his circumstances, mistakes and success’ he would demand that his soul cry out blessings upon the Lord.  His soul belonged to the Lord, and he knew this and was therefore commanding his soul to bless the Lord in all things.  This is the example I leave with you today, that although your life seems off track and out of control at times, your soul is always directly in line with God’s plan and is capable of blessing the Lord, despite your inadequacies and unrighteousness.  Sometimes, you need to remind yourself of this fact, by commanding your soul to Bless the Lord in all things.

What a Throw

Make 2014 a year of Sharing

“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.”  – Isaiah 53:3a

He was running through the hills as any young boy would do in that day.  He and his cousin were climbing and rough housing, throwing stones at the small stray goats on the ledge above him and watching as they scampered over the hill.  Being raised in the hills of Southern Israel, he was quite familiar with the footings and careful where he placed his foot as he moved about.  Looking over the edge of the hill, he sees another goat, picking up a stone, he tosses it in that direction.  He is immediately surprised when he hears a crashing noise.  A stone upon other rock or sand would not crash, and if he had hit the goat it would have been a thump.  As the two boys climbed over the edge of the hill, they discovered a cave in the side of the cliff.

Looking down into the cave they see in the shadows a broken vessel, laying amongst a half dozen other vessels (each standing upright).  Scaling down into the cave, the boys retrieve several scrolls, written upon animal hide and papyrus, written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.  They return to their camp in the lower lands with their treasures.  What they didn’t realize in 1947, was that they held in their hands, the “Great Isaiah Scroll”, which is the complete written word of God as captured in Isaiah 53.  It has been carbon dated by multiple experts to be from the era 200 – 300 years BC.  The single oldest fully complete manuscript found in all of time.  Over the next several years segments from every Old Testament book of the bible (with the exception of Esther) have been discovered in the caves around the Dead Sea city of Qumran.

The Dead Sea Scrolls have provided a point of reference to the authenticity of the Old Testament.  By looking more closely at the writings though, we find the prophetic messages of Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Zachariah and Malachi amongst others.  These writings that describe in such detail the life that Jesus Christ would live some 400 years later, were written as if they were a newspaper article post tense.  God’s Holy scriptures were captured on scrolls, written with a simple feather quill, and provided to the Jewish population of the time in order to prepare them for the coming Messiah.  When the Messiah did come, He was not accepted by most for a multitude of reasons.

Today we have God’s Word which clearly tells us about the return of Jesus Christ and the end of times.  It’s not a story, it is prophetic and intended to prepare us for these days.  If you are looking at the Bible as just another novel on the bookshelf, I implore you to take another look.  History has been played out through the pages and the future will play out just as God has told us through Revelations.  There is no better means of encouragement when we look at the news of this day and age, than to know that our Savior is returning one day and we will be taken home.
