Water the Spirit

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” – James 1:22

We are all familiar with the phrase “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”  Much can be drawn from such a simple statement, as it pertains to life.  We are constantly bombarded with information and data from the internet, the news media and the water cooler.  Some of it is true and can be traced back to facts, but the majority of it is here say, and biased interpretations of the facts and some is just bold face lies to mislead others for one reason or another.  We have all become accustom to the instant answer.  With so much information at our fingertips, we are looking for the quickest route to data, so we can move on to other things in life.  Many have completely forgotten how to do research, verify facts and follow through with learning about something rather than just knowing about it.

Do you know the difference between knowledge and wisdom?  It all comes down to critical thinking, and seeking depth rather than surface level knowledge.  When someone tells you something, you have gained knowledge on that subject.  That knowledge represents the opinion of someone else, and their interpretation and biasness is woven into the data.  It isn’t until you take the time to learn about the particular topic, read, study and gain a deeper understanding that you have gained wisdom on the topic.  So many people are to busy to actually spend the time to learn about something and have become complacent in life.

The same thing applies to your walk with God.  The Holy Word of God is filled with information about who God is, why He is, where He is and how to reach Him.  To each individual the word becomes alive in different ways and must be learned at a different pace.  It is not sufficient to simply see a scripture and take the learnings and teachings of another as the depth of God’s word for you.  You must take the time to read, learn and study it for yourself.  The scriptures apply to your daily life in a way that is unique in many ways.  Certainly, there are the common places where it’s black and white and fully comprehended in the same manner by all; but the meat of the scriptures is intended to be personal between you and God.

I recommend that you take this part of your life seriously and spend the time each day to learn all that you can from God’s word.  There is nothing more important than strengthening your relationship with your creator: the Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit.  I realize it’s daunting if you are just starting out.  That’s okay, here’s a tip to get you going.  There are generally 31 days in a month and there are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs.  Why don’t you start with one book a day?  You can also take any one of the Daily Devotionals that come out each day, grab the scripture verse and then read the chapter from which it came to get the full context of the verse.  Have a notepad by your side and simply jot down the thoughts that come to mind while you read through His Word.

Grow in your daily walk with Christ, and you will soon find that your relationship with Him becomes stronger and your thoughts are soon transformed towards righteousness, love and grace.  I pray that you will take this step in your walk and seek wisdom from the bible, rather than surface level knowledge.  Take the initiative and dedicate the time to the most important part of your life, the results have an eternal impact.  Be blessed.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
You are awesome in all ways.  You have given me life and the opportunity to share Your love with millions.  I am thankful for Your grace and loving mercy to receive me into Your fold.  Help me to grow in my wisdom and understanding of Your word that others might see Your glory through me.  I lift You up in praise and worship, in Your name I pray – Amen
