Giving Up Control

Read It, Learn It, Live It, Share It

“One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.” – Psalm 27:4

The leaf will always be directed by the wind and gravity once it has begun it’s free fall.  As it twists and turns through the air, it encounters turbulence and along the path to resting on the grass or dirt below.  It has no control over it’s destination or the path by which it will reach that destination.  As you watch the leaves falling this time of year reflect on this and realize that we are very much the same way.

We tend to live our lives in an organized chaos.  Trying to control the path through life, but incapable of maneuvering every twist and turn en route to our destination.  All of us have the same destination in this life, but the paths we are taking to that destination are quite different.  Obstacles that come up in the areas of finance, health, work, school, relationships and so on; will all have an impact on the route we take through life.  Turbulence will ensue as we try to overcome problems and stay on track, and often times our path is altered because of major shifts that come into play.  Yes, we certainly have more control than a free-falling leaf, but you must admit that you do not have control over those outside forces that are impacting your life.

It’s often at these times when we tend to draw closer to our Heavenly Father.  You could survey 1000 people and ask them when they seek God the most and I propose that the majority of them will say, during times of trouble in my life.  For most of us, God is not a daily friend, but rather He has become the one we seek when we can’t handle life’s challenges.  We acknowledge that God is in control when times are difficult, because we come to realize that we are truly not in control.  The accuracy of our inclination though leads us to turn God into a “genie in a bottle”.
“God, I can’t handle this problem, please help me through this.”
“God, let him fall in love with me again, like he was when we got married.”
“God, let her live.  I trust in your healing powers”

Are we guilty of convenience praying, or are we pursuing God daily with openness, confession and thanks-giving for what He has already given us?  If you have grasped the fact that there is a heaven and a hell for eternity, then I’m quite certain your immediate inclination is to avoid hell at all costs.  I personally believe the bible is tame on it’s description of “Hades” or the pit of fire.  I’ll be the first to admit, that when I became a Christian it was simply to avoid hell, more than it was to pursue God.  Over the years though, God has taught me that this life on earth is more than just an experience to pass through on my way to heaven.  It is intended to be rich with God experiences, where we are able to bask in His glory and share that with others.  During good times and bad, He doesn’t change, nor does His purpose for our lives.  Keep in mind, you are not here for your sake; you are on this earth for His sake.  Acknowledging the fact that He is your Lord and thereby you are designed to serve Him is an incredibly humbling experience, but essential to strengthen your relationship with God and His Son, Jesus Christ.  When you come to this realization, your daily conversations will change from “God, please do this for me . . . “ to “God, what can I do for You today . . . “

I believe without a doubt that God will give you everything you desire, within the plan He has for you to build up His kingdom on this earth.  This doesn’t mean He is a “genie in a bottle”, it means that He has a plan and knows exactly what you need to execute His plan perfectly.  He knows your destination and is going to use each of you to the amount you allow Him too, while you are still walking this earth.  If you truly want to control the obstacles and turbulence in your life, you must learn to give up that control to Him and walk in His light.
